Studies have been made of the standard penetration resistance of geologically aged, uncemented sands in the U.K. These have undergone increasing degrees of diagenetic alteration with age resulting in decreased porosity, the production of an interlocked microfabric and increased strength. The expected higher blow counts are recorded in tests carried out in dry sand but not where the sand is close to or below the ground water table. Although the mechanism is unknown, this response is in keeping with the moisture sensitivity observed in intact, block samples tested in the laboratory. For the dry sand tests, the (NJ)^Q values are extremely high in both Tertiary and Mesozoic sands.
