The addition of a pore water pressure sensing element to the cone penetrometer has increased the potential value of the test data. The Building Research Establishment has been investigating the potential of the piezocone, which has seen little use in the U.K. so far. Results from several U.K. clays are presented and their use in assessing soil properties discussed. Promising aspects of the test for assessing soil strength, stress history and consolidation characteristics are presented.
