Two static cone penetration tests were carried out in rock paste comprising colliery spoil and water about 18 months after it had been placed in abandoned limestone mine workings. Cone resistance and skin friction were measured during these tests. Further static cone penetration tests were conducted in modified rock paste comprising colliery spoil, pfa, lime and water about 3 months after it had been placed. For these later tests pore water pressures were also measured as well as the cone resistance and skin friction. The usefulness of the cone penetration test for measuring insitu strengths of rock paste, a weak material which is difficult to sample, is demonstrated.
