A new method of placing lead shots in an accurately located radial plane of a homogeneous cylindrical sample of dry sand was developed for the measurement of deformations in dry 18/25 Leighton Buzzard sand during penetration of an electrical penetrometer. X-ray photography was used to record movements of the lead shot markers and the displacement data revealed three distinct zones of deformation around the penetrometer tip. The locations of these zones infer that there could be considerable uncertainty in the interpretation of pore pressure measurements in granular materials with the current piezocone designs. Alternative locations for the porous elements are suggested.
