At two sites in Hull, bored cast in situ piles socketed into moderately weak Upper Chalk were required to support substantial loads. Site investigations were undertaken at each site, including in situ testing by SPT and High Pressure Dilatometer, to obtain design parameters. Laboratory tests were also carried out on core specimens of the chalk to determine intact strength and stiffness. Tentative correlations between SPT N value and strength were obtained and the mass modulus of the chalk, much lower than the intact modulus, was determined in the Dilatometer tests. It was considered inappropriate to estimate the mass modulus solely on the basis of chalk grade, particularly if the grade is derived from SPT data. Non linear stress-strain behaviour of the chalk would produce significant variation in mass modulus with stress level and the modulus of the intact material must also be taken into account.
