1. It is my intention to set out the case supporting the use of more complex reviews and analyses in Port Development work and to try to see in my crystal ball how this trend will go forward. Others will, I believe, be more specific on certain aspects and case studies of this work, but I will try to paint the broad picture to begin. First, it is appropriate to look at a definition of where a port should be situated. "A port is ideally where sheltered deep water directly connected to the open sea is adjacent to low level firm dry land which has direct access to an expanding hinterland."
