First page of Discussion

As in an earlier session, comments

(particularly on papers 13 and 14) were

made about the apparent success in the

application of ALARA techniques. In

practice, doses were often substantially

lower than predicted, and it was

acknowledged that there are often

conservatisms in predicted dose rates and

exposures. There were real savings in

exposure times gained through good

planning, training and operational

techniques, but times in the often

localized high dose rate regions were

admittedly generally overestimated.

Pre-operational/design feasibility

assessments of radiation levels are also,

quite correctly, based on conservative

methods and data. On the other hand

reported actual exposures sometimes
