Discussion to paper 6.4

Chris Brown (consultant) - How do you persuade funding agencies to include in benefit cost appraisals the potential for re-use of materials? For instance, some concrete armour units may be abraded in use without materially loosing strength, but other armouring may be significantly weakened or weathered. How can the differences be included in project cost reviews?

Authors' reply. Benefit cost-appraisal cannot be used or adapted very effectively to encourage the re-use of materials. However, this encouragement is achieved in other ways.
