For the Road and Traffic Administrations, the limitation of the traffic disturbance during maintenance and rehabilitation works is one of the major challenges. Besides the technical aspects of the work, the construction time is mainly dependent on the organisation of the worksite. The tendering conditions – bonus and penalty systems – may also have a great influence. During the summer of 2003, two important rehabilitation projects were carried out near Brussels in which the road administrations and contractors succeeded in completing outstanding concrete pavements in extremely short construction times. The highway A10 Brussels – Ostend had been a source of problems as the asphalt surface was degrading over the entire length. In order to obtain a road surface that would not need frequent repairs, a project steering group decided to choose a road pavement in continuously reinforced concrete. Only 126 days (7 days on 7 and during concreting works 24 hours on 24) were needed to achieve the 250.000 m2 of CRCP. The ‘Dreve de Lorraine’ in Brussels is an old forestry road connecting the highway to the south part of Brussels. After 78 years of good services, this road was rehabilitated in the summer of 2003. It took only 11 days to put an overlay in jointed plain concrete over the 2950 m worksite. Through the choice of a concrete overlay and a skilful worksite's management, the reconstruction of the Lorraine Avenue can be seen as an outstanding example of a sustainable and economical
