In most countries, the thickness and the strength of a concrete pavement are the same over the whole width of the carriageway. All the lanes of a motorway have the same bearing capacity and, therefore, the outward lanes, which are used by heavy vehicles, generally fail much earlier than the inward lanes, which have to carry only light vehicles. Premature repair and partial reconstruction are required. With the recent increase of heavy traffic this happens much earlier now than in former years. Various options are discussed of how to construct a pavement in order to obtain about the same service life for all the different lanes: Trapezoidal cross section, higher concrete grade, and quartering the slabs of the outward lane.
