Two 50 years old jetties, which were still in operation satisfactorily, were assessed in a recent study. For this study, besides visual inspection, a series of in-situ and laboratory tests were conducted on the concrete in the splash and non-splash zone of the 2 jetties to determine the in-situ concrete strength and concrete cover, carbonation depth, chloride profile, permeability, and porosity. Inspection of the exposed bars at the locations where the tests have been carried out reveals that the rebars are not yet adversely affected by the corrosion process due to the ingress of chloride. This is despite the fact that the compaction of the concrete during construction of the 2 jetties is less than satisfactory as evidenced by the very high coefficients of permeability of the in-situ concrete. The study reveals that even though the concrete quality does not meet the stipulated requirements in the technical specifications, the performance of the 2 jetties in the tropical marine environment is acceptable with regular maintenance. This serves to highlight the importance of carrying out regular maintenance of concrete marine structures to ensure satisfactory performance during their service lives.
