In this study, the anchorage of shear reinforcement was investigated with the aim of preventing shear failure of reinforced concrete columns as found after the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake. Examined anchorages include semicircular hooks, rectangular hooks, rectangular hooks with attachments (pipes, S-shaped hooks, and compressed pipes), and rectangular hooks with welded laps. Alternating loading tests were conducted on beams having tie bars anchored with these implements assuming reinforced concrete simple columns to investigate their failure modes, ductility factors, and energy absorption by deformation. The effects of the attachments were then described by comparing the results. It was demonstrated that the use of rectangular hooks instead of semicircular hooks significantly reduced the seismic performance of reinforced concrete columns and that the addition of pipes, compressed pipes, or S-shaped hooks as attachments to rectangular hooks improved their seismic performance to a level similar to that of columns having semicircular hooks. S-shaped hooks are particularly recommendable for being easy to use.
