Chapter 10: Remembering Gabriel Oliva C. Cunha (1990–2019)

April 3, 2019 was a day of sadness. Gabriel Oliva, winner of RHETM’s first (2015) Warren Samuels Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in the History of Economic Thought and Methodology and a great intellectual, passed away. Gabriel was a beloved friend. We studied together in the Master’s program in Economics at the University of São Paulo (USP) from 2014 through 2016. He was cherished by classmates due to his astounding knowledge, kindness, and righteousness. The inside joke that ran through our class was to say “Oliva always wins” every time he had a witty and funny comment that sparked some fine laughter. As the best student in our class, he was always willing to help anyone who was struggling to understand a topic. An all-around economist, equally fluent in micro, macro, econometrics, and many other topics, to the astonishment of some classmates, Gabriel chose to continue the research in the history of economic thought that he had started during his undergraduate years. Thus, we were not only friends, but fellow travelers, a strange duo of historians in an economist’s nest.
