Dr Browne: Paper 5

In our Paper, the performance under marine conditions of concrete and steel in concrete has been examined and recommendations made to provide long-term durability of these two materials in the off-shore environment.

C2. To establish the conditions necessary for avoiding corrosion of reinforcing and prestressing steel, it was of value to examine the electrolytic state of steel embedded in concrete or grout with chlorides present. Spalling situations due to steel corrosion in marine structures were found only in the splash zone and in rectangular shaped beams, piles and bracing members, and can be avoided by thickening of corrosion prone sections and chamfering of sharp corners. The cause in these situations needs defining.
