Technology in human resources (HR) is not a new topic in the field and has been discussed for more than four decades (Bondarouk et al., 2017). Over the years, technology has increasingly been viewed as an opportunity as opposed to a threat, and its benefits are generally summarised as HR efficiency, HR effectiveness and a more strategic role of the HR function (Parry and Tyson, 2011). Rather than providing an extensive historical overview (Kim et al., 2021) of all its developments including landmarks such as the introduction of the computer (1977) and the growth of internet services (1997), we explore a set of technologies available for businesses and discuss the extent of their use within the HR function to date.
