First page of Father and Son

When I started school in the early 1950s, concepts like dyslexia or attention deficit disorder did not yet exist or at least they had not been popularized. Like many thousands of others, I had my share of problems in school. I was a very poor speller, I never learned cursive writing, I got in trouble more than most kids my age, and generally was considered a bit weird by my teachers and fellow students. Things didn’t get better as I grew older. I dropped out of school when I was 16, went back the next year and got expelled at 17, went back the next year. I even attended a residential school for students with special needs for half of one year. I finally graduated after five years of high school and three years of summer school to make up for failed finals. I took two years of French 1 and four years of Spanish 1 along the way.
