Abstract
This chapter attempts to uncover the evolving relationship between religious tourism and technology, and explore how recent developments in technology shape up the religious travel experience. Apart from the use of conventional digital aids like interactive CD-ROMs for widespread dissemination of virtual travel experience, the role of digital platforms in pilgrimage planning, and the use of augmented and virtual reality in enhancing spiritual encounters is the current trend. Furthermore, the impact of social media on religious travel, and the ethical considerations linked with the integration of technology in religious tourism, are important to understand the travel market. Issues like digital surveillance, commodification of religious sites, and digital divide are also crucial while discussing the future trends in this fast-evolving field, with simultaneous emphasis on the significance of responsible technology application in religious tourism. This meticulous comprehension also provides useful implications for businessmen, brand strategists, academicians, and concerned stakeholders regarding the usage of technology in promoting religious sites, and adequately addressing the demands of contemporary travellers, which will facilitate sustained growth and development of the region.
