Abstract
This chapter unraveled key factors that both build or corrode leadership qualities and performance in the Philippine National Police (PNP) using empirical evidence through quantitative and qualitative methods. This study emphasizes that police performance therefore is a result of the interaction of the officer's personality, demographic facets, professional history, and the organization's culture. This chapter will explain elements in these factors that influence good performance for police officers that can guide institutional leaders in managing performance based on these indices. Further, it will open the discussion on the importance of training and mentoring in preparing young officers and recruits for the rigors of service, and advancing evidence-based institutional reforms to ensure that the police force successfully attracts the strongest candidates with the right leadership characteristics for service.
