Chapter 2: An Evolutionary Approach to Technological Innovation and International Business: The Links from the Past to the Future

I am delighted to have this opportunity to reflect on my own research over the years, in light of the theme of this volume on the challenges posed by shifts in the balance of global power over the past 40 or so years in which I have been writing. Given that in my work I have focused on various dimensions of technological innovation in international business networks, for the purpose of this PIBR volume I will relate how my own research interests have adapted to shifts in the loci of global technological power or capabilities. Furthermore, as a longstanding evolutionary international business scholar, I will argue there has been an evolutionary process behind the longer-term shifts we have witnessed in international technological networks, and in the distribution or spread within these networks of powerful positions of innovation and capability development.
