The metaverse, often referred to as the “Internet of the future,” holds significant potential to revolutionize online communication, collaboration, and work-based learning. The integration of the metaverse into educational frameworks presents transformative opportunities for enhancing learning experiences. A bibliometric analysis of 993 papers retrieved from Scopus, spanning the years 2008–2024, was conducted to study future research trends in the metaverse and education. When integrated into educational settings, the metaverse facilitates immersive environments that play a pivotal role in the learning process. The metaverse can expand educational opportunities and support the development of effective strategies to enhance teaching and learning experiences. This bibliometric analysis employs quantitative methods to investigate trends in publications, author contributions, citation patterns, and emerging research domains. The findings of the study provide a roadmap for future research directions to be considered and explored further to adopt metaverse in education.
