The long term effects of secondary consolidation on the consolidation settlement of clay layers is brought under scrutiny using field measurement data, obtained continuously during the last several decades. It is revealed that long-term consolidation settlement curves fall between the predictions of the so-called Hypotheses A and B (derived from Terzaghi theory and Isotach theory, Ladd, 1977). It is also revealed that the gradient of the secondary consolidation curves plotted on semi-logarithmic scales decrease significantly over a decade, and may tend to zero in a hundred years.
