First page of Theory and design related to the performance of reinforced soil structures

1 Six of the authors of papers in this session gave a brief presentation. The following summarises the supplmentary information and comment which is not in the respective papers.

2 Mr D G Jenner (Netlon Ltd) illustrated with slides several types of facing. With the use of full height panel facing (FHP) it was usual during construction to prop this type of facing near the top of the panel. Incremental panels did not need such propping. Soft facings in which the grid reinforcements were wrapped up the face and turned back into the fill, could also be used and a pre-constructed temporary formwork was suggested which could support the soil under compaction stresses during erection. Fig 1. Sometimes an intermediate level reinforcement is used to prevent large bulging and to keep the face plane. Bagwork may be used to form a face and in some cases top soil is used in the bags to allow grass growth on the face. Jenner noted that the different types of facing would influence the amount of load in the reinforcement.
