The technology of P.C.P.V.!s started in about

1959 and therefore we have had a decade of

progress. However, as Lord Hinton himself

pointed out at the conference in 1967, in fact

it was ten years earlier that consideration

was given to this particular form of construc

tion for nuclear containment. Therefore in

the decade since 1959 there have been consider

able advances and these are indicative of the

considerable research and development activity

which has been devoted to this field. The
