3: The Greek Civil War in Film

It was the year 1977 when French historian Marc Ferro published his iconic book “Cinéma et Histoire.” Within its pages, he highlighted the numerous intersecting elements between cinema and history (Ferro, 1988). His work would constitute a landmark for the advancement of the academic field of Film Studies and in particular its interconnection with aspects of historical research. Ferro's study largely focused on the cinematic depiction of events and historical figures from early 20th century Russia and the USSR, such as Battleship Potemkin (1925) and Chapaev (1934). Yet, during the same decade – that of the 1970s – a more recent historical period of another country would start to be represented on the silver screen, causing thus intense discussions and in some cases even strong debates.
