I’m still embarrassed to say that I never really gave the room much thought. I’d walked by the display hundreds of times over the years, and while certainly eye-catching, the roughly 160 international flags hanging from oak dowels at the west entrance of the student union’s Great Hall had always seemed like more of a cool stop on a campus visit than a place where I would actually spend any meaningful time. My experience working with 55 teenagers from around the world, though, quickly shifted not only the way I viewed those flags and those dowels and those strangers sitting beneath them, but also how I would come to approach my role as an English teacher educator.
