Theory and research point to the relationship of problem-based learning (PBL) and authentic assessment to overall student learning. Translating these methodologies into the online learning environment can pose some potential challenges. A literature review reveals that PBL has a foundation within both computer-based instruction (CBI) and more traditional classroom instruction. Given the linkages between CBI and online learning, the presumption can be made that PBL can also find a home in Web-based instruction. Successful PBL scenarios within online instruction do need consideration of the desired learning outcomes, requisite technology skills, the support needed by both learners and instructors, as well as the time required to create effective online PBL. Despite these potential hurdles, excellent examples exist, among them simulations, gaming, and WebQuests.
