This chapter discusses the impact of a shift in the major assignment of an online course from a traditional paper to an interactive study guide. The study involved 79 master’s degree students, all of them K–12 teachers. Teacher reflections indicated that the interactive study guide assignment offered a richer learning experience and that the learning experiences will carry over to the K–12 classroom. Teachers gained in their writing and research abilities, responded with greater enthusiasm, and made use of more technology for reading, research, and writing than was the pattern in the past, often stretching their technical ability in their desire to succeed. The comparative study raises questions concerning the place of the traditional paper in online learning. Quantitative data concerning student use of technology for collaboration shows a marked increase in the use of real-time techniques (instant messaging, telephone, and face-to-face meetings). It is unclear what is behind this increase. Other uses of technology are consistent with that found in the research literature. The course experience suggests the following factors are important for success: preparation of students for collaboration, monitoring and active feedback, and planned reflection.
