In this self-ethnography, I critique the influences of masculinity and managerialism on the experiences of a woman academic department chair. I present a vignette of a college-level leadership retreat as an example of cultural context in which I work as a woman, a feminist, and a department chair. Next, I analyze the vignette and identify a culture that reinforces practices centered on accountability and efficiency that reproduce gender inequality. I address implications of this culture on the future of academic leadership.
