In a previous effort, Shumer (1997) claimed that service-learning and evaluation were an inseparable process. This work builds on that discussion by demonstrating how service-learning and evaluation research are intimately linked through the questions and learning activities that drive the program. The focus is on how the creation of service-learning curriculum follows good qualitative research practice.

In this chapter, Shumer explores the roles evaluation and qualitative research play in the implementation of service-learning. It is important to note that determining service needs of the community and monitoring the effectiveness of service are two fundamental processes in service-learning programs. Students cannot understand their roles as service providers and the assistance they provide to the community unless they continuously reflect, on what they do throughout the process (Dewey, 1938; Kolb, 1984).#184
