The purpose of this chapter is to explore the use of the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) framework in online settings using language routines with a focus on multilingual learners. Since science content is taught in a language they are still learning, these students face unique challenges. The CER framework explained here enables all students to participate in science practices and crosscutting concepts while engaging with disciplinary core ideas. Teachers can use the language routines to engage their multilingual learners to enhance their sense-making and communication skills. The CER framework can be applied in online settings by integrating digital resources into these routines.
