First page of A Look inside the Atom
The Basic Building Block of Matter and the Foundation in an Online Science Course

Atomic structure has always been one of our favorite topics to teach at the secondary level. It is often the first-time students have been exposed to key concepts related to the atom including models of the atom, electron configuration, and valence electrons. Many students are intimidated by the chemistry content, but we have found that a successful introduction to atomic structure opens the door for a positive experience in the chemistry course.

Our perspective on teaching online has shifted over the years based on the role. Between the two of us, we are fortunate to have experienced virtual instruction as a teacher, as a parent, as an administrator, and as an education professor. It is our belief that effective teachers are often able to easily transition their instructional practices into a virtual or blended format. While online instruction creates a unique opportunity to highlight excellent teaching practices, it can also draw attention to any shortcomings at the district, school, or teacher level. Using a 5E Model of Instruction (SDCOE, 2002) on atomic structure for context, we will offer best practices in online science instruction that can benefit all stakeholders. The most important lesson of this chapter is that regardless of the learning environment, the elements of good teaching will always be the same (Teach Remotely, 2002). The Covid-19 global pandemic has forever changed the K-12 educational system; however, educators must continue to focus on their science content, pedagogical practices, and assessment methods. Our knowledge of the “educative” Teacher Performance Assessment, edTPA, has consistently demonstrated that the extent to which an educator can plan along these three dimensions will determine teaching effectiveness—both in-person and online.
