First page of The Social Construction of Interest in a Learning Community

About half-way through a science unit in which her class was learning about egg-laying animals, Cara brought a shoe box to school. What Cara, a grade 5 student, had carefully placed inside the box was a gift for her friend, Belinda. Belinda opened the box excitedly to find some cocoons placed amongst bark, sticks and leaves. “Wow! Where did you find these?” Belinda asked.

“I found some caterpillars in the garden at home and I made an enclosure for them in an old fish tank. I’ve been watching them spin cocoons. I wanted to share some of these cocoons with you,” Cara replied, smiling at her friend’s obvious delight.
