Understanding the Stonewall Riots Through Intersectionality
Moonlight—released in 2016— was directed by Barry Jenkins and based on a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney titled In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. The film portrays Chiron as he struggles with his intersecting identities (masculinity, race, and sexuality) across three distinct time periods: (a) childhood, (b) adolescence, and (c) adulthood. It won the Academy Award for best picture and best adapted screenplay in 2017.
Stonewall—released 2015— was directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Jon Robin Baitz. It portrays the weeks and days leading up to the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City through the fictional character, Danny Winters, who is a white, cisgender gay teenager who flees Indiana and moves to New York City.
