Equal Pay for Equal Work
Based on the novel, The Partner (Jenaro Prieto, 1928), this film follows a brilliant female lawyer – Laurel Ayres (Whoopi Goldberg) – who is passed over for a major promotion, only for it to be given to her trainee, an attractive and masculine white man, because she is a black female. Ayres then creates a persona – Robert S. Cutty (a white man) – and quickly becomes successful on Wall Street, even though Cutty’s success stems from decisions and actions made by Ayres.
