The omnipresence of data in today’s world has prompted calls for increased focus on developing PreK-12 students’ data literacy. Teachers of mathematics will bear responsibility for answering these calls, and mathematics teacher educators will need to ensure that teachers are prepared to teach the statistics and data science content required for data literacy. In this chapter, we review empirical and expository literature to summarize current knowledge about statistics and data science education. We highlight the insights that extant literature offers for teacher education, describe the promise of current innovations in data science, and identify research needed to advance teacher education in data science.
