First page of Transformational Leadership and Transformational Change<subtitle>Reshaping the Legacy of HBCUs and MSIs for the 21ST Century</subtitle>

Over the last 30 years I have been afforded the opportunity to serve as a consultant for over 300 two-and-four-year institutions including 55 HBCUs and Minority serving institutions, and as a result I was able to apply a critical lens to each. In addition, I served on the Executive Council of the largest accrediting body, SACSCOC, for several years and served as a member of review teams who conducted site visits to multiple campuses, including several HBCUs. Thus, I have been able to conduct something akin to a SWOT analysis at these campuses. In most cases Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) are not engaged in campus-wide transformational change although some may be attempting transformation in select areas. It is also the case that senior leaders and Board members at these institutions are not exhibiting, consistently, the transformational leadership that is necessary to drive transformational change.
