First page of Joyful, Powerful Mathematics for All
Schoolwide Lesson Study to Support Teaching Through Problem-Solving

Our chapter examines a case of schoolwide lesson study (SLS), a widely used continuous improvement approach in Japan (NEPRI, 2011). John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) used SLS to transform mathematics teaching-learning over 4 years, producing large gains in student mathematics performance. We describe their work, using adaptive leadership principles (Mehta et al., 2022) to suggest how other sites might learn from this positive outlier (Marsh et al., 2004). Muir School serves low-income, historically underserved student populations but achieves mathematical outcomes similar to or greater than schools serving White, middle-class students, providing a useful case for investigating strategies to increase mathematical equity.
