This chapter analyzes how colonialism is presented in Portuguese history textbooks for the 12th grade since the 1990s, taking into account the political changes occurred in Portugal during this period. A contentanalysis was carried out on five textbooks, with 13 volumes. According to our expectations, no substantial differences were found, except for an increased attention dedicated to the development of colonies. Onthe whole, results show a near silence about perpetrated wrongdoings and the structural inequalities of colonialism. We discuss how— more than 40 years after the “end of the empire”—this kind of contents are still in line with the widespread representations in Portuguese society about the Portuguese colonialpast as a specific case of benevolent and friendly colonialism.
