First page of Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Liberatio

In this chapter, I consciously use the term BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, people of color). In giving voice to antiracism and acknowledging the anti-Black racism that continues to surface. At the time of this writing, the tragic Buffalo mass shooting in which Black victims were specifically targeted for murder has just occurred. This is one of numerous violent events. Historically, and often currently, the dominant culture dictates terms and identities. Self-identified Black community members who may identify as Black, African American, or BIPOC are often redirected by the dominant culture to instead refer to themselves in other terms. In this chapter, I will use Black, African American, and BIPOC. Black will be used to acknowledge and honor the diverse, global, experience of people of the African diaspora, African American to acknowledge the specific and cultural experience as an African descendant in the United States, and BIPOC in acknowledging and honoring the BIPOC experience.
