First page of A Multi-Generational Approach to First Generation

An increasing number of Americans are seeking an education beyond high school, among them first-generation college students, those who are the first in their families to go to college. Half of first-generation college students are from low-income families and more likely to be students of color (Postsecondary National Policy Institute, 2021). They are the first to navigate the complexity of college admissions, financial aid, and choices of college courses. Unlike their peers whose families have had college experience, we should not assume these students will gain information and guidance about how to navigate higher education and find the necessary support and resources from their families. Collaborating with and providing students and their families with guidance and encouragement is integral to creating more equitable opportunities for higher education. This is necessary as we transition from a pandemic that has disrupted our educational system and exposed its inequities to a period of healing and restoration and a more equitable and inclusive campus culture.
