We would like to sincerely thank the editors and the contributors to this volume for the thoughtful, considered and stimulating remarks they make about our work, and for elaborating on the relationship it has to the wide-ranging and exciting sociocultural research in which they are engaged. The invitation to deliver the fifth Niels Bohr lecture at Aalborg was both an honor and a wonderful opportunity to take stock of the work we have done together over the past 15 years. In particular, it allowed us to reflect on the concepts which underpin the “expanded view of memory” that was crystallized in Vital Memory and Affect, and on their future development. We owe a significant debt of gratitude to Jaan Valsiner, Brady Wagoner, and all the organizers of the lecture series for creating that space.
