Chapter 35: Ohio¹

A total of 1,736,847 students attended one of the 609 public school districts in Ohio in FY2021 while 115,419 students were enrolled in Ohio’s 315 charter schools during the same year.² Of the 609 public school districts, 231 districts (with 280,00 students) are categorized as rural (high/average poverty, small/very small student population). Two hundred districts (with 385,000 students) are designated as small town (low/high poverty, small/average student population). A total of 123 districts (with 560,000 students) are suburban (low/very low poverty, average/large student population). Fifty-five districts (with 210,000 students) are high poverty urban while 8 (with 200,000 students) are very high poverty. Approximately 272 districts have under 100 students.³
