A total of 1,736,847 students attended one of the 609 public school districts in Ohio in FY2021 while 115,419 students were enrolled in Ohio’s 315 charter schools during the same year.2 Of the 609 public school districts, 231 districts (with 280,00 students) are categorized as rural (high/average poverty, small/very small student population). Two hundred districts (with 385,000 students) are designated as small town (low/high poverty, small/average student population). A total of 123 districts (with 560,000 students) are suburban (low/very low poverty, average/large student population). Fifty-five districts (with 210,000 students) are high poverty urban while 8 (with 200,000 students) are very high poverty. Approximately 272 districts have under 100 students.3
