This chapter aims to report the major challenges and changes in family formation in Portugal, based on an analysis of the social, historical, political and economic context over the past 40 years. There are changes in the roles of young people with the increase of educational levels, their entry into the labor market, and the post-ponement of family formation. Increased legislation on sexuality and reproduction rights gains prominence, as does the social acceptance of new forms of family. A significant decrease in birth and fertility rates is leading to important demographic losses. The economic crisis that has occurred over the last decade has contributed to the postponement of young people’s economic independence. Portugal is currently presenting a more favorable scenario with the economic recovery and the encourgement of family support policies.
