It is predicted that over the next decade close to half a million people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) will reach adulthood (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Relatively little is known about the work and career experiences of individuals with ASD including how ASD may impact the development of effective working relationships between leaders and employees with ASD. Leader member exchange theory (LMX) with its focus on leader–member relationships (Scandura, 2015) may contribute greatly to creating effective working relationships between leaders and their employees with ASD.
