First page of Practicing Inclusive Leadership by Nurturing and Developing Teacher Leaders

This chapter describes the inclusive leader’s role as it relates to developing and utilizing other leaders—those within the teaching ranks. Principals and assistant principals must come to understand that they are not alone when shouldering leadership tasks and duties, and including faculty members who are capable and willing to lead, means they can begin to turn their attention and energies to other priorities. Identifying and nurturing teacher leaders requires thoughtful administrative involvement and action and is not simply a function of principals stepping aside or taking a backseat. Once teacher leadership is successfully started, it can profoundly impact the school in a multitude of positive ways.
