At the 1970 conference on “Behaviour of Piles” F G Butler and K Morton (both then with Ove Arup and Partners) demonstrated a sound basis for acceptance or rejection of piles constructed and load tested during a contract. The Arup Geotechnics database of pile load test results accumulated over 25 years has been analysed and presented at this Conference (Patel, 1992) (ref. 10). The authors have reviewed the performance of piles made rapidly be mechanical means in London Clay, under tests to establish ultimate and service loads. A prescriptive method for pile acceptance or rejection is proposed. The method may be widely applicable, to piles in soils other than London Clay.
