The results of loading tests on 45 No. bored piles in London Clay from twenty three sites are examined. The undrained shear strength on these sites have all been measured on 100mm diameter triaxial samples. This pile test data has been analysed in terms of the total stress method and it is concluded that higher α values can be used in design using 100mm samples. The shaft resistances of bored piles have also been briefly examined in terms of the effective strength method. Finally, a method of estimating the settlement at working load of both straight shafted and underreamed piles is presented.
