The challenges underpinning the construction or amendment of large impoundments are broadly acknowledged. This is rarely the case when returning submerged landscapes close to their original state. This paper will describe the challenges faced when discontinuing an impounding reservoir, including the environmental, hydraulic and construction sequencing constraints and the strategies used to overcome these challenges. It will also cover the lessons learnt, the importance of early contractor involvement and the need for effective third-party liaison to achieve timely and cost-effective delivery of the works.
