For centuries the world has relied on ports and coastal infrastructure to carry out commercial trade. Supported nowadays by other means of transport, the UK and other countries still import and export around ninety percent of goods though the numerous ports scattered along the coast line. All of these facilities have structural marine assets, with many protected by breakwaters of various age and construction, which are under threat from increasingly severe storm damage. It is essential that a port’s primary assets are therefore closely monitored in a considered, targeted and effective maintenance programme to reduce risk of failure, costly remedial works or substantial loss of earnings.
