Abstract
This paper demonstrates how Integrated Team Working, especially in relation to Value Engineering approaches, can lead to engineering innovation in the delivery of coastal defences using a case study of the Sandsend Road Coastal Protection Scheme, which was completed in 2016 on behalf of North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) at a cost of £9M. The innovative construction method, using a motorised trolley system called the MULE to place pre-cast concrete revetment units, generated cost savings, optimised buildability, reduced health & safety risks, accelerated programme and minimised environmental risk and public disruption.
